Awning windows are well suited for openings in which the width is greater than the height. Hinged at the top, awning windows open effortless outwards from the bottom with a crank and are easily secured with multi-latch locks on the sides.

Awning windows can be installed above, below or beside other types of windows or over entrance and patio doors. On their own, awning windows can be positioned higher on walls to provide great ventilation. Removable screens are affixed to the inside of the window making it easy to remove from inside the home. Awning windows are often found in kitchens and bathrooms.

Awning windows push outward providing extra protection from the elements and can often remain open to let cool air in while it rains unlike some other window types.
Efficiency
Awning windows are more energy-efficient than sliding windows. The reason for this is that they only have one seal on the exterior of the frame. When the window gets cranked or pulled shut, the seal can completely connect and let very little air in or out, no matter the temperature.
Security
Awning windows make it much more difficult for potential intruders to enter your home via the window. They are generally higher up on the wall and also do not have a wide open space for a person to enter through.

Awning Window Disadvantages

Emergency
Awning windows are are higher than traditonal windows and have very little space for a person to evacuate from. In the case of a home fire, this could be dangerous.
Cleaning
Cleaning the outside of an awning window is not possible from within the home. On the outside, due to the height of these windows, a ladder may be needed to clean them even on the ground level.
Protusion
Awning windows push outward from the bottom, giving them their “awning” look. When an awning window is open it protrudes into the exterior space making it easier to bump into.
