Casement windows are windows that open like a door on hinges. These windows open outward not inward. Sometimes they’re called crank windows because the way to open them is by turning the crank handle. It’s attached to the frame and swings open to the right or left.

Casements have lower air leakage rates and are ideal for natural ventilation. These windows are a good option for hard-to-reach areas such as behind the sink.

Sizing
There are limitations on window sizes with casement windows due to casement windows opening outwards. The sash has to be light enough that the window frame can support the weight while open.
Security
This type of window is usually very difficult to break into even if they are not locked, but as they age and their hardware becomes rusty or faulty, they become an easy target for burglars. So this is not a problem for anytime soon but possibly decades later. Really, it’s just a good idea to have a professional check older casement windows for issues.
