Are sliding windows right for your home?

A slider window is a type of window that you open horizontally. If you tilt your head to one side they almost look like double-hung windows. They are used a lot in applications with large horizontal openings.

They’re one of the simplest replacement window designs available. The number of window panes and movable panels can change, but the system remains the same. You can push at least one of the panels to the side to open the window fully.

Most slider windows have two glass panels with one moveable side. You can decide whether you want the moveable pane on the right or the left side.

Sliding Window Advantages

Ease of Use
Sliding Windows glide horizontally on a track with no pulling up or pushing down needed.
Durability
Locking mechanisms do not require a crank making them less likely to wear down when compared to casement and awning windows. They also do not rely on pulleys or springs springs.
Space
Sliding windows do not push outwards into the exterior space surrounding a home making. This can potentially make them a better choice over awning or casement windows if there is a deck or walkway outside of the window.
Ventilation
Slider windows open from the side which provides full ventilation from the bottom to the top of the window. The flip side to this, is that only one of the panels is going to be open so while it’s true you get full flow, it’s only from the one side.

Sliding Window Disadvantages

Weather
In winter, the sliding track may fill with snow and ice, making it difficult to open and close the window.
Cleaning
Over time, the sliding track is prone to collecting dirt which can make opening and closing the window more difficult. Screens may need to be taken off in order to clean the outside of that portion of the window.
Screens
In order for a slider window to operate properly, the screen must be placed on the exterior (outside) of the window frame. This means the screen is always exposed to the external environment and it will likely accumulate pollen, dandelion dander and dirt. Also they may need to be taken off and stored over the winter.
Noise
Sliders may not offer quite as much noise insulation as some other window type choices.
